I had a wedding at The Wimbish House today, and I thought it would be nice to play some Prince during the cocktail hour.
Since I don’t have any Prince songs that I normally play, I dug around in my music cabinet and found this.
I obviously used this book quite a bit when I was a teenager. (I remember I auditioned for a school talent show playing “Goodbye to You” by Scandal. I didn’t make it. True story.) The book fell apart into about five pieces as soon as I opened it.
Lo and behold, I found my Prince song. Notice how the pages to “Little Red Corvette” aren’t falling out at all. See, I told you I wasn’t a Prince fan.
Anyway, there’s something pretty cool about this song that you may not know.
Do you remember this Quite Awesome Song by one of my Heroes, Stevie Nicks?
Stevie Nicks — Stand Back
Well, Stevie wrote it when she was driving to Santa Barbara with her brand-new husband Kim Anderson. “Little Red Corvette” came on the radio and she started humming along to the melody and basically wrote “Stand Back” on the spot. Later she and her husband stopped and got a tape recorder, and she recorded the demo in their honeymoon suite that night.
Prince ended up playing synthesizers on the track, although he’s uncredited on the album.
So if you want to try something kinda fun, sing “Little Red Corvette” while you’re listening to “Stand Back” — or vice-versa.
And hey, here’s something else that I didn’t know until this very minute.
The video above was not the original video for “Stand Back.” The original (below) was shot in a Gone With the Style scenario.
Allegedly Stevie rejected the original video because …
Wait for it …
She thought it made her look fat.
Which version do you think is better?
